Part 3 : On the nature of proper configurations

''What if you slept?

And what if, in your sleep, you dreamed?

And what if, in your dream, you went to heaven and there plucked a strange and beautiful flower?

And what if, when you awoke, you had the flower in your hand?

Ah, what then?’'

- Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1817, readaptation)

In Part 1* of this trilogy,  we established that the nature of existing itself is non-substitutable. I AM therefore I exist does not simply imply that none besides myself in my current identity can perform either the task of my existing or that of my becoming. It establishes rather that one’s existence holds the key to a form of authorship that cannot be substituted without this substitution erasing the uniqueness of the author’s own existence. That is why the disciple ascends through the ontological conditions created and maintained by the Master without being transformed into the Master her/himself at the time of her/his transformation and ascent. More specifically, the Master creates and maintains the particular conditions responsible for generating discipleship but does not create the ontological order that makes ascension possible in the first place. The teaching we were then trying to impart was that transmission of energy does not equal provenance. But what is this provenance then? Is it sourced from the Offices of the Hierarchy like we then established in Part II**?

Part II after all instituted that the Master participates  in a higher order that is greater than her/his own personhood. The same criterion was explored in the disciple who is said to desire the verticality of what the Master offers, not out of autonomous desire, but because of a primitive architecture that already exists within. Autonomous will may experience a pull towards this orientation, but it cannot claim authorship over its provenance or even determine the ultimate measure of its ascension. In both cases, Master and Disciple are believed to remain answerable to and are drawn to an energy that lives beyond what their encounter with each other is or what their relationship will manifest into being. It is from this principle that the Third Energy begins to acquire a metaphysical necessity.

Two individuals on the plane of existence can meet for several reasons as determined by the universal laws governing their karmic relationships or the necessity of an encounter with the other. Yet, our question here remains what makes some of these encounters particularly right? On the one hand, we have discipleship where free will and desire exist. On the other lies mastery where mediation with a Higher Principle becomes a legitimate exercise. Yet neither fully explains the  desire to move towards that Higher Principle together through the nature of a relationship. It would be tempting to call this possibility itself the third energy or something generated through the convergence of two individual energies. But this interpretation would mistake the causal consequences of an encounter for the deeper reality that makes it intelligible. The Third Energy as such is not the product of the right configuration in between two encounters that can mature into the Highest Possible Good.

The Third Energy IS itself the right configuration.

Our concept of the third energy does not rest on the principle of the emergence of a third asset with transformative powers that is born out of relationship. The term “third” is not crude in the sense of having three distinct configurations within oneself: the Self that is, the Self that chooses and the right configuration that drives the Self forward. It represents instead the rightness or as we would prefer to say, the righteousness of an energetic configuration that manifests in between two separate existences that in essence are fundamentally non-substitutable to one other. This touches upon the concept of divine provenance whereby we clarify anew that the Master cannot be the provenance of the disciple’s mode of existing or of ascent nor can the Offices of the Hierarchy represent the provenance of the greater order that generates order within the universe. This is an essential clarification as the Third Energy is purity itself. It does not find itself transformed despite being present as the configuration that will allow an ascent to occur in between two participants. Its purity must therefore be understood as intrinsic rather than dependent upon the moral condition, personal capacities or spiritual attainment of those through whom it becomes manifest. The Third Energy does not acquire righteousness from the participants. Rather, a particular relationship can be recognised as righteous insofar as its configuration corresponds to an order whose purity neither participant can create or alter.

Whilst Hierarchy answers the question:

“Within what divine order and through which legitimate relationships, can an ascension become authorised?”

The Third Energy asks more pointedly:

“What retains the purity of this ascent in such a way that the energy itself remains untouched neither by the characteristics of the ascending participant nor by the configurations existing within the Offices of the Hierarchy?”

The Third Energy therefore is neither the authority behind the Hierarchy nor is it the energy produced by the Offices of the Hierarchy. It is the energy of righteous configuration as it is only through this manner that it can preserve:

-              Divine Provenance as the ultimate source of all creation, not appropriated by the Hierarchy.

-              The Offices of the Hierarchy as the regulatory body serving under divine provenance and not acting as an autonomous authority.

-              The Master as the guide, protector and mediator, but never the proprietor.

-              The Disciple as the locus of her/his own human becoming.

Nevertheless, the righteousness of a configuration must not be confused with a guarantee that transformation will occur. The legitimacy of the Master’s Office does not abolish the disciple’s freedom, just as the disciple’s willingness cannot compel ascenscion. Proper configuration establishes the rightful relation through which a particular mediation may occur. It does not substitute for the irreducible participation of the being who must undertake the becoming. This is why the Third Energy cannot be adequately explained through the language of transmission alone. Transmission describes a passage, but the existence of a passage does not identify the ultimate source of what passes through it, nor establish the righteousness of the relations through which it travels. The Third Energy concerns a more primordial order: the possibility of right participation without confusion of provenance, and of transformation without substitution of existence. In Part I, we established that no Master can accomplish the existing of another being, even where that being’s ascent requires exterior mediation. In Part II, we established that the Master participates in differentiated Offices whose authority cannot be reduced to personal capacities or sovereign will. In Part III, we have sought to explain why even this legitimate hierarchical structure cannot constitute the ultimate provenance of what becomes operative through it.

The Third Energy is not the reward of an encounter, the property of a Master or the collective force of Hierarchy. It is the righteousness of an order that can become manifest through distinct existences without being authored, possessed or transformed by them. What is generated through a proper relationship is therefore not the Third Energy itself, but a new possibility of participation in the Higher through an architecture that preserves the distinctness of every locus involved. The Master raises the disciple without becoming the source of the disciple’s existence. The disciple ascends without becoming the Master. The Offices mediate without becoming the ultimate source of authority. And the Higher remains irreducible to every configuration through which its operation becomes manifest.

Perhaps this is what it ultimately means to be raised by Masters: not to inherit their existence, nor to arrive at the position they occupy, but to participate through their guidance in an order whose righteousness precedes them both. For the highest accomplishment of Mastery is not that the disciple should eventually belong to the Master.

It is that the disciple may ascend without ever ceasing to belong to her/his own existence.
